Whit Dickey: drums
Joe Morris: guitar
Rob Brown: alto sax, flute
Whit Dickey, whose debut on record was Matthew Shipp's Circular Temple and who also went on to perform and record with tenor saxophonist David S. Ware's legendary Quartet, began focusing his efforts on leading and recording his own groups in 1996, making his own first album, the great Transonic, for AUM Fidelity two years later.
On Prophet Moon he leads another tremendous trio, featuring longtime colleagues Rob Brown on alto saxophone & flute, and Joe Morris on guitar. Ahxoloxha, a palindrome invented by Dickey, helps to describe his concept of how the group works together, balanced on all sides. This was the latest iteration of the trio, originally organized by Brown to record Youniverse in 1993, and at various times led by Morris as well. This version centers on the drum compositions and orchestral playing of Dickey, whose original use of space, energy, density, and rhythm provide a unique platform for the group to exchange ideas and create a totally original group sound and music that is spare, deep, melodic and driving.
